John Harvey DEWAR was born 1929 in East London, South Africa; he attended school in Bulawayo and Grahamstown, started painting in 1944 after which he did 6 years of architectural work and study in East London and Cape Town before working his way on a ship to Britain; 1951-1952 he attended evening classes at the City & Guilds of London Art School and in Hampstead.
1975-1985 and from 1987, John DEWAR was an art critic for The Star newspaper in Johannesburg; he was also a theatre and radio critic. He lived in Westdene, Johannesburg, had 1 daughter and 2 sons.
As from 1956, John DEWAR participated in various group exhibitions in South Africa. He passed away on 20th May, 1998.
